Restoration of the 2472

Engine 2472 heading into the workshop

The operation of steam locomotive SP 2472 has been the centerpiece of museum activities ever since the museum restored it to operation in 1991. The restoration was a 16 year effort by museum volunteers. The 2472 was withdrawn from service in 1996 when an overheating problem developed on a main axle. Repairs to the axle and journal are in progress. A complete running gear rebuild and renewal is also being done while the axle is repaired so that the locomotive can operate for many years to come without further work. These repairs are time-consuming and expensive.

In addition to the running gear work, a boiler rebuild is being pursued. The boiler of 2472 was completely rebuilt and reflued during the original restoration. However, new Federal Railroad Administration steam locomotive rules require a complete new boiler inspection and flue removal within the next three years if the 2472 is to continue to run. The museum wishes to complete this work while the axle and running gear work is being completed.
